Obedience Training Classes in South Austin By Dog Trainer Kim Roche

Everyday Obedience Training
$150 for six weeks. Suitable for beginners six months and older.All dogs should know these five foundation skills:
- Sit
- Down
- Stay
- Come when called
- Walk politely on leash.
Your dog will learn to sit politely at the front door instead of bolting out, lounge beside your feet in a relaxed down stay instead of begging for scraps and stroll at your side through the park. You'll learn how to stop problem behaviors such as destructive behavior, pushiness, stealing food, excessive barking, jumping, hyperactivity and digging.

Wednesdays at 12:00pm beginning February 8

Middle School
$150 for six weeks. Suitable for puppies and dogs 5 to 12 monthsAdolescent dogs need positive outlets for their energy, and training classes are just the thing.
In this ongoing class, you'll learn:
- sit and down-stays
- coming when called
- greeting people politely
- walking nicely on leash - no pulling!
- heeling - on and off-leash
- accepting grooming, handling and veterinary care
- leave it and drop it
- exercises to build focus and attention span
- behavior problem solving.
Leash-Walking 101
$100 for four weeks.You and your dog will join a small group of other dog owners to learn:
- how to stop pulling and lunging
- a relaxed, strolling pace for leisurely walks
- a faster pace for exercise
- precision heeling for busy streets and public places
- how to get and keep your dog's attention
- how to walk past BIG distractions like squirrels, cats and dogs behind fences.

Off-Leash Obedience I: Come When Called
$100 for four weeks. Suitable for beginners.Teach your dog to come running each and every time you call her, no matter where she is or what she's doing - even when you don't have treats. Learn to avoid bad habits that can make your dog less likely to come to you. This all-positive class will arm you with foolproof ways to give you and your dog all the freedom and fun of off-leash play, including Kim's infamous no-fail emergency recall.

Off-Leash Obedience II: Hit the Trail
$100 for four weeks. Prerequisite: Off-Leash Obedience I or equivalent.Going for a long run, hitting the swimming hole, hiking, mountain biking and even kayaking are more fun when your dog comes along. Especially here in Austin, there are so many opportunities to get outdoors with your best friend.
Ever wished that you could
- take an off-leash hike?
- know what good off-leash play looks like and avoid trouble at the dog park?
- heel politely past distractions?
- navigate farmers' markets and crowded sidewalks?
We will challenge our dogs with a number of distractions and find out what really gets their attention in this seriously fun class. Hiking with Your Dog is one of the best things you'll ever do with and for your dog. Knowing how to come when called could even save her life someday!
Class meets in a new location every week.
Now enrolling:Sundays at 10am beginning February 21.
Finishing School
$100 for four weeks. Prerequisite: Everyday Obedience, Middle School or equivalent.Finishing School builds on the firm foundation you and your dog have developed in Everyday Obedience. Now it's time to practice and polish the skills you've already learned and explore some new ones.
This class will help you to
- have a dog who can greet visitors to your home and mingle at parties without jumping and begging
- take your best friend along with you while you chill out on the patio of your favorite cafe, restaurant or bar
- prepare for the AKC's Canine Good Citizen test
- practice the skills most therapy dog programs require
- get ready for agility, flyball and other activities that require high levels of motivation, focus and control.
Each class meets for one hour once a week for four weeks. The first class meets at Southpaws Playschool; classes two, three and four will meet at various locations around town.
